US Secretary of Energy Zhu Diwen delivered a speech on "Addressing Energy and Climate Change Challenges: The Story of Two Countries" at Tsinghua University yesterday morning. In 80 minutes, Zhu Diwen finished almost in one go. His lectures are similar to those of scientists, rigorous, and speak with data and facts.

Both parents are from Tsinghua

The triple identities of Nobel Laureate in Physics, Secretary of Energy of the United States, Chinese descent, and Zhu Diwen attracted a large number of Tsinghua students. Nobel laureate Yang Zhenning and his wife also attended the event. The lecture hall that can accommodate 300 people is full of seats and the aisles It's full of classmates who come here. At 11 o'clock, Zhu Diwen showed up on time. Despite the hot weather, he was still dressed up, white shirt, dark suit, and dark tie.

Zhu Diwen has a deep connection with Tsinghua University. His parents both graduated from Tsinghua University. At the beginning of the speech, Zhu Diwen mentioned this past event, "My parents graduated in Tsinghua in the early years. I am proud and proud to be able to speak here today." After speaking concisely, he entered the topic of the speech.

Suggest that China and the United States strengthen cooperation

Energy crisis, climate warming, rising sea levels, energy-saving design of buildings, planting of energy crops, the scientist minister’s speech has a strong scientific atmosphere. In the speech, Zhu Diwen didn't have many expressions. The slides displayed were mostly data charts, and the scientist's characteristic of speaking with data and facts was fully revealed. His speech also mentioned a lot of new technologies and ideas for energy saving and emission reduction. For example, he mentioned that the roofs are painted white, which can effectively reflect the solar heat and reduce the greenhouse effect.

He suggested that China and the United States strengthen technical cooperation in energy conservation and emission reduction to jointly tackle climate change. Finally, Zhu Diwen cited a famous quote by the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King to emphasize the urgency of tackling climate change: "We are now facing the fact that tomorrow is today. Today’s situation is extremely urgent, and the history of mankind Such a tragedy is repeated in the long river, and it is too late."

Chinese is not good and English throughout

Although his ancestral home is Taicang, Jiangsu, his parents graduated from Tsinghua University, but Zhu Diwen's Chinese is not good. He speaks in English in academic and official occasions. Yesterday was no exception. An 80-minute speech was delivered in English. Finally, due to time, the question and answer time was cancelled, which disappointed many students who were preparing to ask questions. Xiao Mao, a junior in the Department of Architecture at Tsinghua University, said that Zhu’s speech felt a bit more like a scientific lecture, citing a lot of data and graphs, and the arguments were very rigorous, logically clear, and less interesting.

Zhu Diwen and another Chinese-American Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke arrived in Beijing by the same plane at 5 pm the day before yesterday to begin their three-day visit to China. It is the first time in the history of Sino-US relations that the two Chinese ministers have jointly visited China. (Reporter Liu Zhiqing)
